Description in English: Culture and literature in the tales of Gabriel García Márquez brings together six essays on different aspects of the genre in which the brilliant writing of the Colombian Nobel laureate was revealed. Topics such as the representation of Afro-Colombians and women, the background of the culture of Magdalena in the narrative plots, the influence of François Rabelais and the relationship between the oniromancy of García Márquez and the Amerindian are complemented with a fresh reading key that invites us to reopen Doce cuentos peregrinos to discover in that book the novel that we had not seen. Although the author once said that he wrote tales "so that my hand would not get cold", the reading of these essays will confirm that Garciamarquian short stories are not at all a small-scale trial of a hurried and experimental writing. On the contrary: their careful study demonstrates, if necessary, that his tales are essential pieces of a country's literary invention.
