Description in English: Santa Marta is the oldest city in the continental Western Hemisphere. The Sevillian scout Rodrigo de Bastidas founded Santa Marta on July 29, 1525, so that by 2025, five hundred years of Spanish presence in this territory will have passed. Since then, Santa Marta would be under the command of a Spanish governor, who exercised civil and military authority over this territory. Spanish rule lasted for nearly three centuries, during which some eighty-five governors exercised their office, characterized mainly by the brevity of their administrations.The Universidad del Magdalena and the Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia (ICANH), with the support of the Cultural Center of the Bank of the Republic in Santa Marta, promoted the publication of this book to teach about the history of some of the most influential governors of this province, filling a gap in Samarian and Colombian Caribbean historiography.The book has eleven chapters addressing the political, administrative, and military actions of fourteen governors of the province of Santa Marta, which span from its founding in 1525 until the defeat of the royalists in 1820.
